Ideas linked to our inquiry How do we ensure that play-based and problem solving inquiry leads to higher levels of student engagement and accelerated progress for all students?
Our students definitely need to use the really wide range of forums for online discussions for a purpose, other than socialising. What they choose to use, needs to be a tool to enhance their learning and encourage critical thinking eg sharing inferences, opinions, synthesis and analysis. Asking questions that will encourage critical thinking.
Media: What is active learning? (video)
Main points
- Discovering, processing and applying information
Ideas linked to our inquiry How do we ensure that play-based and problem solving inquiry leads to higher levels of student engagement and accelerated progress for all students?
Online discussions need to be for the purpose of discovering, processing and applying information
The discussion could be for:
- Evaluating information
- Synthesising information
- Analysing information
- Understanding information
- Finding out information
This is a hierarchy of purposes for an online discussion so students need to link the value of using them, what they already know about their use in reading ie Evaluating leads to deeper thinking, than finding information
